Google Business Profile — Local SEO Playbook
How to Rank Your Google Business Profile in the Top 3
A complete, step-by-step checklist for optimizing your listing — plus the ongoing habits that keep you there.
Best Practice Example
What a fully optimized, top-ranking listing actually looks like
JS Russell Electric | Omaha Electricians
- 5.0 stars across 381 reviews — consistent review volume builds trust and ranking strength.
- Public address & map pin — supports local search relevance.
- Open 24 hours — hours reflect when calls are answered, not just when service is performed.
- Keyword in the title — “Omaha Electricians” signals exactly what they do and where.
- Photos, website, and direction links all filled in — nothing left blank.
One of the most important ranking factors for your Google Business Profile (GBP) is making sure every field in the “Edit Profile” section is filled out — all of it. The steps below are exactly what we follow with clients, and they don’t require any special technical skill. Just follow them carefully, in order.

Book a Call →
1
Make sure you’ve signed up for a business listing
If you haven’t signed up for a Google Business listing, go to google.com/business, log in with your Google account, and fill out the necessary info. A verification postcard will arrive in the mail with a code — this is how Google confirms you’re a real business. Follow the steps on the postcard to complete verification.
3
Open the “Info” / “Edit Profile” menu
Once logged in, click the “Info” or “Edit Profile” button in the left-hand menu of your Google Business dashboard.
4
Make your address public
Profiles with a public address tend to rank in the top 3 more often — though this isn’t a hard rule. There’s a search-relevancy benefit to having a physical location, even if you don’t meet customers there.
⚠ If you operate out of your home, Google will typically suspend a listing that uses a home address. Getting an office address of some kind to make public is usually worth it.
5
Determine a focus keyword
Choose a word or phrase you think people would actually use to find your business — for example: “Tulsa plumber”, “bathroom remodel Dallas”, or “Houston general contractor”. Use tools like BrightLocal or Keywords Everywhere to find a service-related term with strong search volume.
6
Put your keyword in your title (or form a DBA)
Examples: “JS Russell Electric | Omaha Electricians” · “Top Tier Tulsa Remodeling” · “Roger’s Plumbing Georgetown Plumbers”
⚠ If your keyword isn’t part of your legal business name, form a DBA that includes it. Google can suspend listings that use a keyword which isn’t a legal part of the business name. When in doubt, skip the keyword and use your legal business name only.
7
Update your service areas
Include every specific city and county you perform work in — be exhaustive. Do not include areas you would not actually service.
Why this matters: Service areas, hours, and a keyword-rich title are among the strongest local-ranking signals Google reads. Being thorough and accurate here helps Google — and customers — immediately understand what you do, where you do it, and when you’re reachable.
8
Update your hours based on when you answer the phone
Businesses with 24/7 hours tend to rank higher for longer. Many service companies only list the hours they perform service — and lose customers because of it. Your hours should reflect when you take calls, not just when you’re out in the field.
9
Update your “Special Hours”
List the hours you will or won’t be working during holidays or other exceptions. Be thorough — if you’re closed on Labor Day or any other holiday, reflect that here.
10
Add a website link
Make sure your website is up and active before linking it.
11
Add in “Social Profiles”
Link directly to your social pages — Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others.
12
Edit your Services
Based on your main business category, Google auto-fills a templated list of the most popular services. Add those, then add services manually — be exhaustive. Watch the walkthrough: Loom — Services & Products Walkthrough.

Add a description to each service, written to the maximum character limit, using ChatGPT:
Write a unique description between 275–300 characters describing our “roofing” service to customers for the “roofing” company named “COMPANY NAME“
13
Add “Products”
Same walkthrough applies. Write descriptions up to 1,000 characters using ChatGPT, and link each product/service to the specific page on your website that covers it.
Write a unique description between 900–1000 characters describing our “roofing” service to customers for the roofing company named “COMPANY NAME“
⚠ If there isn’t a page on your website about that specific service or product, don’t add it to your GBP.
14
Completely fill in your description
Get as close to 750 characters as possible. Include a keyword at least twice — the words customers would actually type into Google to find you (e.g. “plumber near me”, “Sacramento electrician”, “best Seattle remodelers”). Avoid placing your business name in the description itself.
Description outline:
- Brief introduction to the services you provide
- Customer Service — why it matters and why you’re great at it
- Clear Communication — why it matters and why you’re great at it
- Fair Pricing — why it matters and why you’re great at it
- Close with a call to action
“Will’s Resource Electric is YOUR go-to for all of your Sacramento electrician needs. Regardless of if it is as small as screwing in a lightbulb, to as big as full building electrical wiring, we are here for you. Customer service to us means treating you like family and ensuring that every need is satisfied and every expectation is met! You should expect clear and transparent communication from Sacramento electrician; this is something we strive for every client. Staying in budget is our specialty because we understand how important it is to ensure there are no surprises so you can rest easy at night knowing you got the best deal and the best service for your pocket book. As soon as you have an electrical need, call Will’s Resource Elec!”
15
Add your “Opening Date”
Add the exact date — or at minimum, the month and year — that you opened your business. Example: “Opened in August 2018.”
16
Add a post / update
Your post can highlight a recently completed project, a branding update, new team members, an upcoming event, a special offer, or discounted pricing on a popular service — every business can find something to post about.
Example: before/after post with a clear CTA (“Call now”).
17
Add at least 15 photos
Before uploading: download each photo to your computer, then rename each to your focus keyword with a different number — e.g. “Tulsa Carnivals – 1”, “Tulsa Carnivals – 2”. Upload images across every Google Business photo category — team at work, office interior and exterior, your truck, headshots, group photos. Get to at least 15, and add a cover photo and a logo photo too.
Example Photo Set
What a complete, well-rounded GBP photo library looks like for a service business
Notice the mix: branded vehicles, the office exterior, completed jobs, and team members on-site. None of these are professional photoshoots — they’re real, current, and specific to the work this business actually does. That authenticity is what Google (and customers) respond to.
⚠ Ranking higher doesn’t happen from doing this once. You must have continual activity on your listing — that’s the most important part of the whole process.
Staying in the 3-Pack
What to do on an ongoing basis to keep climbing — and stay there
3–5 / week
New photos added
5–10 / week
New reviews collected (as many as you can get)
Every 2–4 weeks
New post / update published
Ongoing
Respond to every review
- Continuously update your profile info as anything changes.
- Reviews can take up to 14 days to appear on your listing after being left — don’t be discouraged, keep collecting them.
